Marketing Examples : Most Successful Ads in History

Many websites give you marketing examples that are the prettiest, most creative, etc. Today I present the most successful 50 magazine ads of all time. What I mean by successful, is return on investment. So if you want to create a successful ad you should use the following ads as a template.

Are these ads creative? Yes, but not at the expense of providing enough information so that the client can make an informed decision on whether to buy. Each ad contains a powerful headline, normally one eye attracting image and more text than you’ll see in many unsuccessful ads of today.

The Marketing Examples below were successful because they were the first to:

  • Market through story telling
  • Turn a negative, of their company into a positive
  • Sell with a money back guarantee
  • Copy the look of the newspaper they appeared in
  • Use creative testimonials
  • Include a snip out request for more information
  • Use odd looking spokes people
  • Use take away sales techniques, ie. this might not be the product for you…
  • Tell the whole story with their photo
  • Include their interesting jingle in the ad
  • Show their product being used in odd ways
  • Use scantily clad women in the ad
  • Simulate using the product, in the ad
  • Provide samples of the product in the ad

Not only were these ads creative, they were truly revolutionary. And the consumer rewarded them for their hard work, with tons of cash. By the way, these magazine ads would provide you with a great template for a flyer, poster, sign or bulletin board.Enjoy and if you have any questions leave them in the comment section below.

  1. That rss option on your site here is magnificent, you should tell more folks about it in your next post. I haven’t noted it a first, now I’m using it every morning to check on any updates. I’m on a very slow dial-up connection in Germany and it’s rather daunting to sit there and wait for such a long time ’til the page loads… but hey, I just found your rss page and added it to the Google Reader and there you are… I’m always up-to-date! Well pal, keep up the good work and make that rss button a little bigger so that other people can enjoy that as well :-P

This kind of makes me feel like advertising is just one big lie!

I wish the world took to the Henry Ford approach to business. . .

I felt the same as you and you are right that all advertising is manipulative. Let me give you an example from my life on why advertising must manipulate to work.

I was a computer programmer that became a stock broker. I figured if I was the best investor clients would gravitate towards doing business with me. I went on to get my CFA, which is the highest designation that one can get in the financial industry. (Most mutual fund managers aren’t CFAs)

I was able to secure clients I did retain very nice returns, but when meeting with prospects I didn’t use any manipulative techniques. I struggled for 2 years in that industry even though I was a better investor than just about anyone at the firm.

I went on to study books on NLP and how to influence people. Through understanding these techniques I was able to persuade people to do business with me without lying, but definitely through manipulation.

My take is that an honest person needs to be manipulative, otherwise they will definitely get manipulated by an untrustworthy person. Just my opinion :)
