Nobody Goes to Your Website

Website Grader BadgeIt is really a shame how many people get ripped off by malicious web designers. I’ve read a statistic recently that stated, after 3 months, 86% of people are unhappy with the traffic their sites are generating. What makes that fact even worse is that the average site cost $7,500!

In this article, I explain some of the ways I’ve found success at generating web site traffic. This will be information that you have never seen in just one article. And, from what I’ve seen personally 99% of websites do everything wrong!

How Much Traffic Do you Get

You are going to be surprised by the lack of traffic you get. I’ve found the best way to monitor your traffic levels is through either Google Analytics, or Alexa.com.

I’ll go over the Alexa.com option first, because it is the simplest. Just go to Alexa.com and download the Alexa Toolbar. Depending on your browser, you will either see the traffic rank for your site, in the top left or bottom right of your screen. Here is what mine looks like

Alexa Toolbar Rank

This number states that my site is the 139,469 most popular site in the world. In other words, I get more traffic than 99.55% of all other sites in the entire world.

Alexa is very accurate until you break into the top 175,000, but then it fluctuates wildly. After you install the Alexa toolbar, look at your rank. How much traffic do you get? Chances are that you are not ranked at all, because most people aren’t ranked.

Search Engines to Submit to

The main reason sites aren’t ranked is that they haven’t been submitted to search engines. You can submit your site by going to these sites:

[adsense]

You’ll have to sign up for an account at these sites, but I trust you can do that with no problem. Also you need to have a:

  • Sitemap.xml File : Tells search engines what is on your site and how often they should come look at it
  • Robots.txt File : Tells search engines where the sitemap.xml file is located and if they are welcome to look at the site
  • A Google Analytics Account Helps

You can check if you have the first to by going to ismyblogworking.com. This site will tell you if you have a robots.txt file. If you do you probably also have a sitemap.xml file. Basically without these files, search engines will not feel welcome to look at your site. If they don’t feel welcome, they won’t tell other people to go there. Hence, you get no traffic from search engines!

You may also like to find out what else has been done incorrectly on your site. Websitegrader.com will tell you just that. It will rank your site from 1 to 99, based on how well organized your site is. I have the highest rank possible at 99. You can see my proof at the top of this article. That is my Website Grader Badge. You can get your own at Websitegrader.com. If you have any questions about the report, leave them in the comment section below.

Based Off My Rank How Much Traffic Do I Get

You’ll be very surprised by the small amount of traffic you receive. Here are some examples:

  • Rank Higher than 3 Million : Average of 20 hits or less a month
  • Rank 2 Million to 2.5 Million : Average of 300 hits per month
  • Rank 1 Million to 2 Million : Average 450 hits per month
  • Rank of 500k to 1 Million : Average 550 hits per month
  • Rank of 250k to 500k : Average 2,300 hits per month
  • Rank of 100k to 250k: Average 6,000 to 10,000 hits per month

The point I’m trying to make here, is that if your site doesn’t rank in at least the top 1 Million, you are wasting your money. The only way you’ll make money off of your site, is to be ranked at least in the top 250,000.

How Do You Increase Your Traffic

To increase your traffic, you must:

  • Write timeless great articles
  • Collect good content from other sites
  • Get a bunch of other sites to link to you (Generate Incoming Links)
  • Post your content on social networking sites
  • Get links to your site on Stumble Upon, Delicious and Reddit
  • Post videos on YouTube
  • Post comments on blog forums

You may be surprised to know that I generate most of my traffic by posting videos on YouTube and commenting on blog forums. Those two acts account for over 70% of my total traffic. You may be even more surprised that social network posting accounts for less than 4% of my traffic. Newsletters do little to boost traffic as well.

Now I do have original and timeless articles here on this site, but I have other sites that are completely automated that average over 3,000 hits per month. I wrote an article on How to Make Money Blogging.

The Bare Minimum Your Site Must Have

In my opinion, the only sites that have any chance of generating traffic are WordPress websites. Don’t worry WordPress is free! The reason WordPress sites do better than others is:

  • They are easy to automate, so you won’t have any problem posting every day
  • They can automatically send your articles to hundreds of social networks through automation
  • They alert search engines every time you make a change
  • They load quickly
  • They automatically generate RSS feeds, which every website must have
  • They automate the creation of sitemaps
  • They are easy to set up and maintain

It is your responsibility as the site owner to post every day, either manually or through automation. If you don’t, you will never draw traffic. Also, you should not expect a lot of traffic if you ignore YouTube and blog forums.
