# Inkscape Video Tutorial 5

In this part of my Inkscape video tutorial I focus on the Inkscape Tiled Clone Tool. I also cover clones and how they work in Inkscape.

I explain what every tiled clone tool does and provide a few examples of the cool things you can create with them. Specifically we’ll look at Symmetry, Shift, Scale, Rotation, Blur & Opacity, Color and Trace. We’ll make cool patterns, flowers, spirals and so much more. I also have my notes listed below the video to help you along.

Notes on the Inkscape Tiled Clone Tool

CLONING

1. Edit -> Clone

2. When you clone an object any changes made to the original effect clones

3. Unlink clones will allow you to make changes without effecting others

4. You can clone a clone

5. Inkscape Preferences provides settings for Clone

CREATE TILED CLONES

1. Repeat an object in many different ways

2. SYMMETRY TAB

a. Rectangle with 4 dots

b. Diamond 90 W – 150 H 120 degree rotation

c. The Unclump button helps make randomized patterns more organized

d. Draw a bean and demonstrate the patterns

e. Shift check exclude tile & Rotation 60 degrees Per Column

f. P2 through CMM use rotations by 180 degrees and horizontal and vertical flips

g. P4, P4M and P4G produce rotations of 90 degrees and are square

h. P3, P31M and P3M1 produce rotations of 120 degrees and are triangular

i. P6 and P6M rotate by 60 degrees and create hexagonal patterns

3. SHIFT

a. Defines the spacing between tiles

b. Draw 6 point hexagon

c. Shift X : 50 -> Shift Y : -25

d. Draw square

e. Shift X Per Column : 10 -> Shift Y Per Row : 10

f. Alternate : Alternate the sign for shifts for each tile

g. Cumulate : Cumulate the shifts

h. Exclude Tile : Ignore the tile height when shifting

4. SCALE TAB

a. Increases or decreases size from tile to tile

b. Draw a square and put -15 in X & Y Per Column

5. ROTATION

a. Draw Triangle 20 in Per Column (1 Row / 7 Columns)

b. Draw a star and move its center point outside the star

c. Set Shift to exclude height and width

d. In Rotation set Per Column to 60 / Per Row to 0

e. 6 Rows and Columns

6. TRICKS

A. FLOWER PATTERN (Ellipse)

a. 12 Columns / 1 Row

b. Rotation angle 15 degrees per column

c. Shift X : -100% per column

d. Shift Y : -100% per row

a. Simple Translation : Rows 8 & Columns 10

b. Shift X: -100% Per Column & Shift Y: -100% Per Row

c. Rotation : 2 Degrees per row & 18 Degrees per column

7. BLUR & OPACITY

a. Changes the blur and opacity as tiles progress

b. Keep triangle and set Fade Out Per Column 16%

8. COLOR

a. Changes the Hue, Saturation and Lightness

b. Set the Fill and Stroke to Unset ?

c. Click on Initial Color and set a color

d. CMYK : C: 0, M: 100, Y: 100, K: 0, A: 100

e. Set Per Row and Column to -16.7%

f. Put -16 in S Per Column

g. Put -5 in L Per Column

h. Zero everything and put -16% in Rows and Columns for S

9. SPIRAL STARS

a. SPIRAL : No Fill & No Paint Stroke

b. STAR : Fill Unset Paint

c. Group Above

d. Tile Clones – P1 – 2 Rows & 20 Columns

e. -100% Shift X per column & Shift Y per row

f. Scale per column X & Y at 30%

g. Column Rotation 30 Deg per row & 60 Deg per column

h. Color Tab : initial color Red & Hue 10% per row and column

10. TRACE

a. Sets the tiles color, size, opacity, etc. based on the image under it.

b. Specify which property of the image below will effect the tiles

c. Edit Gamma which tries to correct color distortions

d. Bottom defines how the input will effect the tiles. Presence is the probability that the tile will display.

e. Show examples using a rainbow gradient
