Install Elixir

Install ElixirIn this video tutorial I’m going to show you how to install Elixir on both Windows and MacOS. The reason I’m doing this is because I’ll be uploading a Learn Elixir in One Video in a few days.

Elixir is a fantastic functional language that utilizes the Erlang VM to create systems that are stable and scalable because it can utilize thousands of processes.

Below you’ll find both a video as well as a list of steps to follow to setup everything.

Steps to Install Elixir & Atom

Setup Elixir

Install on MacOS

A. Download HomeBrew : https://brew.sh/

B. In terminal type 
	1. brew update
	2. brew install elixir

Install on Windows

A. Download the installer here 
	1. http://elixir-lang.org/install.html#windows
	2. Click next a bunch of times and finish

B. Check that everything is ok by typing elixir --version
in the terminal or command line

Setup Atom for Elixir

A. Get Atom : https://atom.io/

B. Install Elixir Package
	1. Packages -> Command Palette
	2. Type install
	3. Select Install Packages and Themes
	4. Search for Elixir
	5. Install language-elixir

Test Install 

A. Create file elixirtut.ex

B. Paste this
defmodule M do
  def hello do
    IO.puts "Hello World"
  end
end

C. In terminal or command line go to the directory
with your file and type iex

D. c("elixirtut.ex")

E. M.hello

F. Exit iex with Ctrl-g and then q
