A while back I did a series of tutorials on MySQL. However, because you guys requested a more example heavy MySQL tutorial I’m now going to provide that.
If you want to check out the previous tutorial I have it in both text and video format here:
- MySQL & Statements in SQL
- MySQL & Statements in SQL Part 2
- MySQL & Statements in SQL Part 3
- Complete SQL Statements Video Tutorial
I especially am happy with the articles!
In this video, I go over the basics of using MySQL. For example: Creating Tables, Data Types, Entering Information, Deleting Tables and Basic MySQL commands.

Hi Derek,
Can you tell me why my Insert statement returns 0s in the last_meeting column? Because I see that you insterted the value 201010912121054. I did the same an it also returned zeros.
Make sure you have the proper size set in your database. I see that problem all of the time. I bet that is it
Hi Derek,
I do not have a server installed on my computer. Do I need a web host to use mysql or can I just download it on my computer and start practicing without paying for a web host?
Thank You
Hi, Yes you need a server. Why not try WAMP?
Just came upon some youtube videos you made on php and then into MySQL. I was following along until you started entering the code directly [Web Design and Programming Pt 14 MySQL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ywkQ9aGhVo&list=PLIFHTc3jGhJc2jqaQEkybW1OdkVJDtxu1%5D.
My MySQL is part of the package that came when I loaded Xammp so there is a phpMyAdmin [not the command lines features you use]. How can I/What do I need to do in order to be able to enter the command lines in the fashion that you do. I would like to use both the MyAdmin but want to take advantage of the skills you are demonstrating in your video. Regards.
You can access the console version of MySQL with Xammp. Look for the folder like this c:\xampp\mysql\bin
and then execute mysql.exe -u root. You can also put it in your path so you can access it outside of that folder.
