The Stock Market is Dead

The Stock Market is Dead

I want to start this article, by explaining what I mean by dead. The stock market is no longer what it was. Long term investing is dead. By and hold are dead. It is my opinion, that only a very sophisticated investor can make money in the market now. The problem is that brokerage house’s keep telling everyone that the old days will come back.

I received a direct mail piece from a brokerage company last week and it took me back to the old day’s. I used to be a stock broker and one day I started to wonder about our marketing. Why did we only show the performance of the stock market from 1980 to 1999? The piece I received last week, did the same thing. It’s 2010! Why not show the performance for the last 10 years?

The reason is that the Dow Jones Industrial Average grew by 13.99% year over year during that period. This growth rate historically was off the charts!

What is the average return of the Dow historically you ask?

From 1897 thru 2003 the Dow grew by only 5.16% before fees! In fact the return of the market from 1897 thru 1980 is but 3.73%, which is approximately the average rate of inflation. The real rate of inflation, not the made up inflation number the government now uses.

I have the chart’s to prove all of this below. I used this time period (1897-2003), for a couple of reason’s:

  • I had this information on hand.
  • In 2003 the market was roughly where we are today, being that the Dow is floating between 9800 to 10,000.
  • I didn’t want you to think about the financial disaster of last year and now.

Click the chart below and then zoom in to see the whole story of the Dow Jone’s Industrial Average.

Dow Jone's Historical Performance

I think this pretty much kill’s the idea of long term investing. The market has done nothing for 10 year’s.

Broker’s Know How to Make Money Right?

Major brokerage companies cannot consistently even beat the long term returns of the Dow Jones Industrial. Want some proof to back that up? Here again are stat’s based off of performance from 1993 to 2003 instead of the current mess. They couldn’t make money back then either. (Note: For fund’s that didn’t exist in 1993, I provide since inception result’s)

Fund Results 2

This information is almost un-believeable. Remember, these number’s are even worse today. To break this down, these mutual fund return’s were provided on a 10 year or a from inception return. Here is how they performed:

  • 61.3% of these fund’s lost 20% or more
  • Only 3.3% provided a return of over 7%

Even the supposed best mind’s on Wall Street being Goldman Sach’s gave their wealthy customer’s bad advice 77% of the time. Bloomber recently reported “Seven of the investment bank’s nine recommended top trades for 2010 have been money losers for investors who adopted the New York-based firm’s advice!”

Investing in the Past

When I was a broker, I was taught by some very wise older broker’s how to invest in the stock market. You have no doubt heard of Asset Allocation. Asset Allocation is nonsense! It is based off of the real way to invest, which is called Covariance Analysis.

Through Covariance Analysis, you create efficient portfolio’s made up of stock’s, bond’s and short selling, for risk aversion. The ultimate goal being, to create a portfolio of investment’s that provide the greatest return at the lowest risk.

Here is a brief example. Let’s say you own Hershey stock. You notice that when Hershey falls in value, sugar rises in value on average. If you added sugar to your portfolio, you would then lower your overall risk level. This would be a more efficient portfolio.

Now imagine if you did this by looking at how all investment product’s perform. You could create the ultimate efficient portfolio! One hedge fund actually did just this for many years producing average return’s of 19%, with not a single loss sense inception. They were called NWQ. They were bought by Goldman a few year’s back.

The New Way, Sorry you Can’t Do This

Well that was the old way to invest. It still would work much better than how most people invest today, but from what I’m seeing there is a much more profitable way. It seems to be legal to front run? Front running is when you know someone is planning on making a big investment, so you buy in ahead of them and then sell at the inflated price soon after.

Also, we are aware of how derivative’s have been used to buy insurance on the soon to be dead. If you want to learn how derivative’s and swap’s work, read my article What are Derivative’s & Swap’s.

Why Did the Market Go Up in the 1980’s

Your probably wondering why I have waited so long to talk about this. So, that I don’t turn this into a political blog I’ll just say two word’s: Political Reason’s! Both Democrat’s and Republican’s are at fault in my opinion.

That’s All Folk’s

If you have any question’s leave them in the comment section below. I made this article, because I received request’s for more article’s on investing. I’m working on a Efficient Portfolio article as we speak! It should be fun.

The Recipe’s that Keep Me Thin

Diet Nutritional, Nutrition HeartI started out last October 2009 at 248 lbs. I knew I wanted to lose weight for good this time. So, I created a diet based off of nutrition book’s and not fad diet’s. I’m now down to 175 and at my target weight.

I think the most important thing’s I learned on this diet is:

Video That Show’s the Best Food’s

What Do I Eat?

Here I’ll list my favorite meal’s. One of them is Pizza! These keep me excited and contain those food’s I couldn’t give up. The only thing I think you must eat everyday is a high fiber cereal and a healthy bran muffin or piece of bread. Here are the best cereal’s, listed in order:

  1. All Bran, Bran Buds
  2. Bob’s Red Mill, 10 grain, Hot Cereal
  3. Ezekiel 4:9, 100% Flourless Grain Cereal

Here are my favorite muffin’s / bread’s:

  1. Ezekiel English Muffin
  2. Bran for Life, 100% Whole Grain Bread
  3. Sara Lee, Whole Wheat Bagel
  4. Brown Berry, Whole Wheat, Double Fiber
  5. Fiber One Blueberry Muffin Mix

Veggie Burger & Baked Potato & Veggie’s

I eat this at least once a week. If you slice a potato into wedge’s and bake them at 425 for twenty minute’s you have some healthy potato chip’s. Here is the rest of the meal:

  • 1 Whole Yukon Gold Potato, sliced and baked
  • 1 Garden Burger Garden Vegan Pattie
  • Eden Organic Brown Mustard
  • Heinz No Salt Added Ketchup
  • Slice of Tomato
  • Slice of Onion
  • 2 Slices of Wonder Bread Whole Grain White
  • A bunch of veggie’s fried in a pan with a short spray of Pam
  • 1 cup of Broccoli
  • 1 cup of Cauliflower
  • 1 cup of Asparagus
  • 1 cup of Carrot’s
  • 1 cup of Brussel Sprout’s

That’s for anyone that says you can’t eat a lot while dieting. It’s the calorie’s that count, not the quantity. For the rest of the article, if I refer to fried veggie’s I’m referring to the list above. You can substitute with the veggie’s I list here: The Best Food’s

Turkey Meal

  • Quorn Turk’y Burger
  • Heinz No Salt Added Ketchup
  • 1 Whole Yukon Gold Potato, sliced and baked
  • Fried Veggie’s

These fake turkey burger’s are really good and healthy.

Chicken Patty Meal

Here is a twice is a twice a week at most meal. The chicken patty is to die for, but a little high in fat. Eat this to reward yourself.

  • 1 Quorn Chik’n Pattie
  • 1 Whole Yukon Gold Potato, sliced and baked
  • Eden Organic Brown Mustard
  • Heinz No Salt Added Ketchup
  • Slice of Tomato
  • Slice of Onion
  • 2 Slices of Wonder Bread Whole Grain White
  • Fried Veggie’s

Tomato Sauce & Pasta

This is the healthiest pasta meal I can put together. The best pasta and sauce. Remember to use as many fresh or dried spice’s as you can. Avoid salt, but use pepper and other spice’s to the max.

  • Ronzoni Smart Taste Pasta
  • 1 can Del Monte Diced Tomatoes No Salt Added
  • Pepper
  • 2 Tbs Fresh Basil, or as much as you want
  • 1 Clove of Garlic, or as much as you want
  • Any other spice, except salt
  • Fried Veggie’s
  • 2 Slices of Wonder Bread Whole Grain White

Super Breakfast

I love this and you can eat it as often as you like.

  • 2 cups of Mushroom’s
  • 1/2 cup Onion’s
  • 1/4 cup Jalapeno’s, or pepper you like
  • 2 cups of spinach
  • Crushed Red Pepper, or your favorite spice’s
  • 3/4 cup of Egg Beater’s
  • 1 Whole Yukon Gold Potato, sliced and baked
  • 1/2 slice of Galaxy Nutritional Rice Vegan American Cheese

Then choose one of these:

  • 2 Slices of Wonder Bread Whole Grain White, with a Tbs of Honey
  • 1 Serving of Fiber One Pancake Mix, with fresh blue berry’s

Pizza

I’ve been working towards the greatest pizza recipe for over 10 years. Here it is. This is my once every 2 week treat. This recipe make’s 4 servings. So you can only have 1/4.

  • Preheat oven to 550 degree’s
  • Get a pizza stone
  • Get a bread machine, or mix by hand?
  • 2 cups of luke warm water
  • 3 cups of King Arthur Unbleached, All Purpose Flour
  • 1 cup of Soft As Silk Cake Flour
  • 1 Tbs Natural Sugar
  • 2 Tbs Dry Milk
  • 2 tsp Active Dry Yeast, mix it in the warm water

Topping’s for pizza

  • As many veggie’s as you want
  • 3/4 cup Buffalo Mozzarella, or Non-fat Mozzarella if your feeling guilty (This is for the 2 pizza’s)
  • 1/4 can Del Monte Diced Tomatoes No Salt Added
  • As much garlic as you want
  • As many spice’s as you want (No Salt)

Bake the 2 pizza’s for 12 minute’s at 550 degree’s.

Fish in a Bag

This is a great way to steam fish in the oven. Use one of these super healthy fish:

  • Flounder
  • Orange Roughy
  • Perch
  • Cod

Preheat oven at 475 degrees. Then after you fill a pan with aluminum foil, place the following inside and wrap the aluminum foil around:

  • Fish Fillet from the list
  • Pepper
  • 3/4 cup of white wine
  • 1 clove of garlic chopped, or as much as you want
  • Handful of fresh chopped basil
  • 2 cups of cherry tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice

I then eat this with my stand by veggie’s and maybe a potato.

Super Fast Salmon with Fava Beans

  1. 24 Oz Fava Beans
  2. 3 Tbs Thyme
  3. 2 Tbs Olive Oil
  4. Black Pepper
  5. 6 Tbs Lemon Juice
  6. 2 Tbs Eden Organic Brown Mustard
  7. 1/8 Cup Olive Oil
  8. 4 Tbs Chives
  9. Black Pepper
  10. 2 6 Oz Wild Caught Salmon or Tuna (Tuna is a bit Healthier)
  11. 2 Radishes, Diced
  12. 2 Celery Stalks, Diced
  13. Parsley

This meal can be made in 15 minutes if you cook the salmon (tuna) on an outdoor grill. If you cook the salmon on a grill, turn up the heat on full blast on one side and half way on the other side. Put olive oil on a paper towel that has been stacked. Quickly wipe the paper towel on the low heat side of the grill and then place salmon on that same side of the grill. Close the grill lid and let cook for 5 minutes, then flip and cook to taste. If you don’t have an outdoor grill, spray a pan, turned to high with PAM. Place salmon in pan and let stand for 5 minutes. Flip the salmon and add a half cup of water, cover and let steam til done to you taste.

Blend the lemon juice, Mustard, 1/4 cup Olive Oil, Chives and pepper. Remove from blender and chill. Blend Fava Beans, Thyme, 2 Tbs Olive Oil, Pepper and then fry in a pan like refried beans.

Take the bean mixture and place in center of plate. Place salmon (tuna) fillet on beans and top with lemon / olive oil dressing. I love this!!

That’s All Folk’s

This is the staple meal’s that make up my diet plan. All healthy, for the most part (pizza). They all taste great to me. Just never ever eat fast food, but instead eat homemade and healthy and you can only lose.

iPad GPS, Does it Work

iPad GPSI took a trip to West Virginia and tested out how well the GPS and internet worked. You can see part of the trip in the video.

iPad AT&T Data Plan Speed

AT&T has different type’s of internet coverage provided through their data plan. I tested three of them on this trip. The New York Times site took about 35 second’s to load, on their worst coverage type called Partner Edge. Their highest signal strength called 3G, took about 18 second’s to load the same web page.

The iPad GPS

The good new’s is that the GPS didn’t lose it’s signal on the whole trip. It provides all of the different view option’s that Google provides. It is Google Map’s in essence.

The bad news is that there is no voice guided direction. So if you want to know where to turn you have to watch the screen. This doesn’t make for a safe driving experience. It’s a deal breaker for me.

Get your Web Page to Load Faster

Go Daddy Grid HostingIncrease Website SpeedOver the last few week’s, traffic on my site has dramatically increased. One problem, my current hosting plan was no longer cutting it. My site was unavailable all together every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11am to 1pm. This is by the way the time when the most people are on the internet, looking for new website’s.

I was at that time on a Go Daddy, Deluxe Hosting plan. This is what they call a shared hosting plan. That means that I was sharing a server with a bunch of other website’s. So, my site’s speed was not only effected by my traffic, but also by those other site’s I was sharing space with.

Dedicated Server?

Everyone I was talking to, told me I’d have to bite the bullet and get a dedicated server account. A dedicated server would solve the problem, but they cost between $60 to $300 per month! I’m not the New York Time’s! So, I started looking for other alternatives.

Grid Hosting?

An alternative to dedicated servers, is Grid Hosting. Here as your traffic increases, more server’s are called online to serve data to your hungry visitor’s. It has been absolutely amazing. Let me compare:

Shared Hosting

  • During heavy traffic period’s my web page wouldn’t load at all
  • During semi-heavy period’s my site would take 7 second’s to load
  • My site on average took 4 second’s to load (Still not fast enough)

Grid Hosting

  • My site loads in 2 seconds or less during heavy traffic periods!
  • It costs the same amount as the shared deluxe plan ($6.99 / mon)
  • Go Daddy, will perform the whole account transfer for free

Negative’s of Grid Hosting

  • You can’t use Java on your site
  • You can’t use ColdFusion on your site
  • You can’t serve your own video, but you can embed video

False Rumor’s About Go Daddy

Almost everywhere you look, you see people saying how bad Go Daddy is. Who are these people? My guess is that most of them are competitor’s. The reason why is that every time they say something bad about Go Daddy, they talk about how they host with this unknown hosting company. I’d like to set a few thing’s straight:

  • My average wait time is normally 3 minute’s for free customer support
  • It takes about 10 minute’s maximum for them to make any site change’s for you
  • They will walk you through most any fix on the phone, for free
  • They are very inexpensive for all that you get
  • I have had period’s in which I had to contact them multiple times in one day. All the technical support, was free

You should definitely give grid hosting a try. Heck, if you have a Deluxe Plan already, it cost’s the same per month.
