Handling Customer Complaints

Handling Customer Complaints

Paul De’ Man sent me an email asking me how to handle customer complaints. Great question Paul!

Business’s spend a great amount of time and money to get customers, here are some stat’s you probably don’t know:

  • On average, twenty six unhappy customers won’t complain for everyone that will
  • Each of these twenty seven customers will tell an average of sixteen other people about their bad experience
  • This means that every complaint you hear represents 432 negative impressions. That’s 1296 unhappy
potential customers for every three complaints.
  • It costs 5 times as much to attract a new customer as to keep a current one
  • 91% of your unhappy customers will never come back to your business again
  • If you ask for complaints no matter how small and remedy them you will be able to keep 82% of those customers.

What is the Tea Party?

What is the Tea PartyI’m writing this article because Mark5 wrote in asking, “What is the Tea Party?” I normally would never write about politic’s, but I stated I would answer any question posed to me. I’ll do my best to provide the most accurate information possible. So, here we go.

The whole concept for the name ‘Tea Party’, is based off of the Boston Tea Party. The Boston Tea Party was a protest by colonists against taxes imposed on them by the British government. The colonist’s demanded representation in the British Parliament in exchange for paying taxes.

Programming for iPhone: Introduction Pt 2

Tragic Eleven iPhone AppIn this article I will wrap up the creation of the Tragic Eleven Ball App. We will create a icon for your app and then I’ll give you all the code you need. If you missed the first article, go check out Programming for iPhone Pt 1 first!

Creating an App Icon

To create an icon for your new app, create a good representative of what your app does and save it as a PNG file. The dimension’s must be 57 x 57 pixel’s. You don’t need to round the edge’s or add a glare to the button. The iPhone software does that for you. Here is the one I made, to the left. Save it as icon.png.

Make an iPhone App Pt 1

Make iPhone AppThis is the second series I’m doing on iPhone and iPad programming. The first time I covered the underlying language called Objective C. If you haven’t seen that already, go there first. Objective C Tutorial

In this series I will teach you how to program for the iPhone / iPad, by showing you how to make working app’s. First, you need to understand the concept of the Model-View-Controller.

Model-View-Controller

In the programming world there are things called Design Patterns. You really should understand OOP Principle’s before you try to move into the world of Design Pattern’s. Go here to learn Object Oriented Programming.

If you understand OOP, you’ll understand that a Design Pattern tells you how to structure objects and classes so that you can best solve specific problems. By using a Design Pattern:

  • Those you are working with will understand your code
  • You are coding with maximum efficiency

So, now back to the Model-View-Controller. The whole framework used to program on the iPad and iPhone, is based on the MVC. Let me give an example on how a user of your app will interact with the MVC interface:

  • The user interacts with the screen or View, by pressing a button
  • The View, or the button on the screen, tells the Controller that a button has been pressed
  • The Controller tells the Model that a button has been pressed
  • The Model, that stores all the data, functions, and state change information may tell the View to change. It may also get data required by calling specific function’s.
  • The Controller may require the View to change also

To break it down simply, the Model is the brain of the app. It knows what the app is doing at all times, knows when anything has been changed, knows what function to call when anything occurs.

The View knows when someone has interacted with it.

The Controller is contacted when the View has been interacted with and then decides what to tell the Model.

If you don’t quite get it, a few example’s should make it very clear.

The Tool’s you Need

You need the following tool’s to write iPhone/ iPad app’s:

  • A Macintosh Computer that run’s OS X 10.6 or higher (A Mac Mini will do the job)
  • You need to sign up to be a iPhone Developer http://developer.apple.com/iphone/
  • You need to download the latest version of the iPhone SDK (current version is 3.2, but 4.0 is in beta)
  • You’ll need a working knowledge of Objective C. You don’t have to be an expert, just be capable of reading code.

There are three versions of the iPhone SDK, which are all the program’s you’ll use to program with. They are:

  • The Free SDK: Allows you to create program’s, but won’t allow you to load your program on a real device, or upload them to the Apple App Store.
  • The Standard SDK: (Cost $99) Allows you to write program’s, load them on a device for testing and upload them to the Apple App Store
  • The Enterprise SDK: (Cost $299) All the functionality as the Standard version, but is set up to allow for more than one developer to work on the app at the same time.

In this presentation I’ll be using the Free & Standard SDK. You’ll more than likely use the same.

What Tool’s do you Get with the SDK

  • XCode: Is a tool used to write, compile and debug your app
  • Interface Builder: Is the tool used to drag and drop interface element’s on your app’s screen
  • iPhone Simulator: It will show you how your app will run on a simulated iPhone.

The Tragic Eleven Ball

The app we are going to make is called the Tragic eleven ball. It will allow the user to ask the iPhone a question, click a button and then get some bad news. I’ll walk you through how every line of code works.

Start up XCode

  • Double click on the XCode icon (The Welcome Screen provide’s links to documentation, video tutorial’s, sample code, etc.)
  • Click on New Project…, which lies under the File menu item
  • Click on Application, in the left sidebar, under the words iPhone OS
  • Click on View-based Application, in the center of the screen. (The View-based Application is the simplest to use. Since this is your first app, it only makes sense to use it.)
  • Click the Choose… button, and type Hello World, in the popup window

You are on your way to creating your first app. The XCode Application has many part’s:

  • Groups & Files: All of the file’s needed for your project are located here in folder’s.
  • Top Toolbar: Provides a quick click to commonly used tools. Click Build and Go and your app is compiled an run in the iPhone Simulator with a click.
  • Detail View: The window that lie’s to the right of Groups & Files and under the toolbar, is known as the Detail View. It provide’s you with additional information on the file’s you select in Groups and Files.
  • Editor Window: The biggest window is where you will edit and view your code.

Groups & Files

I feel I should provide some detail on the types of file’s contained in the Groups & Files Window:

Classes: This is were most of your code will reside. Since you named your Project Hello World, some file’s have already been created for you, as you can see if you click on the arrow next to that folder.

Other Sources: Here you will find pre-created framework’s (code library’s) and the main() method for your app. These file’s are also pre-made for you.

Resources: Here you store any data you might need. Such as: your app’s icon, Hello_WorldViewController.xib (the controller for your app), MainWindow.xib (The code needed to build your interface, or view) and the plist file that contains info on your app.

Frameworks: Pre-made code libraries available for your use.

Products: Contain’s the working app, after you compile it.

That’s All Folk’s

I hit you with a lot of information in this article. Tomorrow, or in the next article I create the rest of the code needed for the Tragic Eleven ball.

How to Video Blog

zefrank how to vlogI’m asked in the real world all the time the question, “How do I get rich on YouTube?” I have the answer for you today!

I have been studying all the big hitters for a while now. I will provide your answer and assume these things:

You are not extremely attractive, even though you are I’m sure!
You are not an amazing videographer.

Your not afraid to show your face.

You have a good personality!

If the above apply, you are in luck. As I studied all the most successful Vloggers, I came across one true shining star. His name is ZeFrank. He is, in my opinion, the greatest vlogger ever. He is probably the most successful vlogger as well. And, all the successful YouTubers seem to copy from him, to one extent or another.

Here is a sample of ZeFranks work. Note: If you are offended by a little swearing don’t watch this video. He swears a little.

[quicktime]http://www.mybusinessbuilders.net/Images/HowtoVideoBlog.m4v[/quicktime]

ZeFrank studied neuroscience, by trade and I think he applied everything he knows about the brain to his videos. I’ll now break down all the techniques he uses. To become successful, just copy as many techniques as you can.

Opening

  • He normally starts off every video by acting as if he is trying to chase away new viewers. This creates a feeling that you are in a private club with him. “Are the new viewers gone yet?” (Very Powerful Psychologically)
  • He then addresses you as a club member. (All his club members are called Sports Racers)
  • He refers to himself as Ze, ZeFrank and Knowledge.
  • Often shows a user submitted version of his logo, which is a rubber ducky. (Involves the viewers in the show and who doesn’t like rubber ducks?)

How to Video Yourself on YouTube so Viewers will Love you

  • He always videos his face up close, so that he fills the screen. (Easier to associate with him, because people normally watch small versions of the video on their computer.)
  • He edits his clips down so that there is a constant stream of words. (Doesn’t allow the viewers mind to wander.)
  • Edits out the blinking. (Might be something psychological to this?)
  • Moves his head between edits so that he is constantly moving in the video. (Keeps the viewers attention)
  • Talks to the viewer as if they are having a personal conversation. (Builds the relationship)
  • Tells the viewer he likes them and that they are friends. (Builds the relationship)
  • All videos are 3 to 3 1/2 minutes in length. (Optimum time so the viewer doesn’t get bored. Never go over 4 minute’s in length!)

How to Get More Comments on YouTube

  • Involves viewers by reading their comments. Titles this part of the vlog, showing its added importance. “Something from the comments”
  • Reads the comment from the last person to post a comment. (Creates an atmosphere in which viewers are fighting to make the last comment. Hence, tons of comments are posted.)

How to Get More Ratings on YouTube

  • If you are the last person to comment and you gave the video a good rating, you become the “King or Queen of the Comments!” (Now visitors are inclined to not only comment, but also to provide a good rating)

How to Get Video Responses on YouTube

  • If a viewer video tapes themselves performing a power move, they may be inducted into “The League of Awesomeness!” (Increases the number of video responses)
  • Once a person makes it into the League of Awesomeness, they also get a special code name.

Increase Viewer Activity on YouTube

  • Creates fun games that viewers can participate in like the “Earth Sandwich Project.” Here viewers team up to place a piece of bread on the ground at the exact opposite sides of the Earth.
  • Shows clips from other influential vloggers. Then people comment that they saw their video on the ZeFrank show. Then those people go to watch the ZeFrank show. (Technique used to infiltrate other popular Vlogs.)
  • Provides the viewers with the opportunity to create the format of his show. “Fabuloso Friday”

Build a Community of Viewers on YouTube

  • Sells T-Shirts emblazoned with the Sports Racer logo, that was created by fans.
  • Gives away Sports Racer ringtones, with the Sports Racer theme song.
  • Posts on a daily basis. (Creates a daily routine, where the viewer has to watch the new ZeFrank show.)
  • Use odd phrases that make the viewer feel like an insider. “Yes no I this is”, “I’ve got the walnuts, show me the baby”, etc.

How to Format an Interesting Show on YouTube

  • Mix serious news with comedy. (Some people like news, some like comedy, but everyone likes ZeFrank.)
  • Takes viewers on trips to places they may not have the opportunity to visit.
  • Created music videos that explained the news or where just pure comedy.
  • Break the show down into pieces that have a short theme song and funny name. “Things I like that are gay”, “Say the opposite”, “Something from the comments”, etc.
  • Attack someone that the general public doesn’t like. In ZeFrank’s case, he attacked George Bush.
  • Tell funny stories about photos. “President Bush pictured here wishing he had a mustache”, “Alberto Gonzalez pictured here patting the invisible man on the back”, etc.
  • End the show with an interesting closing, to reestablish the brand. “This is ZeFrank, thinking so you don’t have to.”

Other Random ZeFrank Vlogging Techniques

  • Talks to imaginary co-workers.
  • Posts video’s of his mistakes.

Other Vlogger Tricks

  • Another trick people use to get more views, is to post an opening title screen that is interesting. “Celebrity”, “Odd photo”, etc.
  • Obviously, an interesting title will draw attention.
  • Many attractive Vloggers get away with just being attractive.
  • The more videos you post, the better chance you have of hitting on a subject the masses may be interested in.

Wrapping Up

That’s pretty much everything I learned from watching the best Vloggers. I don’t necessarily think ZeFrank planned to do all that he did to trick people into watching him. I instead think he aimed to create a very entertaining show. In my opinion and in the opinion of millions, he succeeded.

Start a Restaurant

Eggplant ParmesanThe thing that baffles me more than anything else, is why restaurant’s give away their recipe’s. What is even stranger, is that other restaurant’s don’t copy them?

Everyday on the Food Network, the best restaurant’s give their recipe’s away. I made custom recipe’s based off of the best of the best. I specifically aimed at creating a menu based off of the must have’s for a successful small restaurant.

If someone just copied these, I can’t imagine that their restaurant wouldn’t be a success. If you have any question’s or comment’s leave them below. Enjoy!
